I was responding at the same time you were, MrM. I wasn't sure, but I separated in and to, largely because we say check-in and check-out time. Any thoughts?

I (British) would probably separate in and to. I think this is because I can check in without saying what I check in to.

My (teacher) son is here on a visit, and we have just discussed this. He also thinks he would use two words in writing, but neither of us could be sure that we would not use one.

So, the "European shift" is taking over. Guess I'm right in the middle. Glad to know I'm not alone in the question. Good night, Mr. M -- Good day, 5jj (and son).

Good afternoon, Phillip. The European shift has been around for seven hours.

I have just seen what COCA has for us on check/checks/checking/check into/in to a hotel.
