Is it correct to 'put in a category'?

Is 'in a category' correct and is the whole thing natural?

I feel like after our trip together, he has put me in a different category in terms of friendship. I used to be a friend, now I'm a good friend. I used to be in the friend category now I'm in the good friend category.

Thanks
