Is it correct? If not, how else can I say it?

Is the underscored part correct and does it make sense?

She's having a party tonight. I've just been to Paris, but thought I'd make it back so I could attend. She's going to be very surprised when I show up.

Is the underscored part correct and does it make sense? It's OK. But we usually talk about making it when there is some doubt, so I've added the idea of trying to make it.
