Is it correct "base form of the verb"?

Hello,

Is there a difference for the explanation in using what is underlined? I mean are both of them correct?

a) We form the present progressive also, called the present continuous, by using the auxiliary verb be with the present participle of the main (principal) verb ending in -ing.

b) We form the present progressive also, called the present continuous, by using the auxiliary verb be with the base form of the main (principal) verb ending in -ing.

BCN are both of them correct? Basically, yes. But the first one is a bit better because it assumes you've already formed the present participle from the base form.

  • Basically, yes.
  • But the first one is a bit better because it assumes you've already formed the present participle from the base form.
  • That includes any irregularities in forming the present participle.
  • The second one is not quite as good because it requires knowing that there are a few cases where the base form with -ing is not the correct present participle.
