Is it correct?

Hi! I want to know whether my understanding of the below coloured sentence right?
Governess-:I am here to teach your brother David.
Girl-:Good luck. (Girl talks to herself or in her mind)-:
None of the others(past governesses) have made it past a week.
To my understanding, it means-None of the past governesses have succeeded in teaching David even after a week.(Is it correct?)
And also could you tell me the exact word for talking to oneself or in your mind, I mean whisper to yourself without letting the other person know what you are saying?
Thanks!

silak12 None of the past governesses have succeeded in teaching David even after a week. This interpretation is close without being exact. "have made it past a week" says that the other governesses were dissatisfied with the situation and quit before a week had passed.

  • silak12 None of the past governesses have succeeded in teaching David even after a week.
  • This interpretation is close without being exact.
  • "have made it past a week" says that the other governesses were dissatisfied with the situation and quit before a week had passed.
  • The sentence is not so specific as to say that they were unable to teach David.
  • More likely, David was incorrigible, and the governesses were unable to tolerate his misbehavior.
