Is it correct?

This formal similarity may cause overestimation of learners’ knowledge, and as a result they might do not check these words in a dictionary (as they might do with completely unfamiliar words). It should be emphasized that recognition and understanding of words in isolation is a more difficult task than deducing the meaning of words in a reading passage.

Not sure if this version is better....

The similarity between form of words in L1 and L2 may cause that the learners overestimate their knowledge. Thus, they will not check these words in a dictionary, as they probably do with completely unfamiliar words. (or: nd we assume that they check completely unfamiliar words)
