Is it correct?

The sequence of example sentences:

'The wolves were greedy, ate too many rabbits, therefore the number of the rabbits have decreased to a big extent by the end of the summer. The wolves were starving from the end of the summer to the beginning of the winter due to the fact they weren't able to grasp the importance of the moderate life.'

I would like to emphasize the blue part. I saw the structure 'by the ...' mainly in other tenses. Here it is strange to me. 'until the end of summer' would be also strange to me in that case. So I don't know the truth.
