Is it clear?

When she was diagnosed with cancer a year ago, the doctors gave her 3 to 5 years. But suddenly it just went really fast, and she lost the battle last month.

Hi. I posted the sentence a couple of days ago and was told that it wasn't clear whether the 3-5 years seemed to pass quickly or the diseased suddenly took off quickly defying the doctor's prognosis.

My question is if it would be clear that it's the disease I'm talking about if I add a "downward" after "fast" or what else I could do?
