Is it better if I omit 'try'

They would tell him nasty lies to try and discourage him from the career he had chosen.

Should I keep the word 'try' or would it be better if I just wrote: They would tell him nasty lies to discourage him.....

Thanks a lot.

If ‘they’ have been successful in the past, I would omit “try”; but otherwise they are just attempting to discourage him, so include it.
