IS IT ASSISTANT HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGER OR...

If the undersigned of a letter is an Assistant Manager to the Human Resource Manager, does he sign off as Assistant Human Resource Manager or Assistant Manager, Human Resource? Thanks.

Hello, Rosemary — and welcome to English Forums. These both sound reasonable to me: Assistant Human Resource(s) Manager Assistant Manager, Human Resources This, however, sounds odd: 'Assistant Manager to the Human Resource Manager'.

Thanks, Mister Micawber. I notice that you have added an "s" to Resource. I have often wondered why my boss deleted the "s".

He has deleted it when it is an adjective, since it is usual to use the singular form in such a case; however, there are exceptions when the word remains strongly plural in concept (sports arena, communications chief) and I think the same holds of 'human resources'. However, I suppose both are acceptable.

Thanks, your opinion has reduced the tug-of-war inside my head each time it gets the opportunity to surface.
