In a university in an English-speaking country, spotting a non-native speaker would be an easy task. His accent alone is enough to give him away. For students whose native language is not English, ESL , the acquisition of English language is really challenging. ESL students face many problems while learning English.

To start with is the example of English usage. ESL students generally tend to use simple vocabulary. In their pieces of writing there is usually an overuse of simple verbs like to do, to make, to have, etc. Furthermore, there is also an unadequacy of words. ESL students generally can not make the slight difference in the denotation of many words, and therefore a different meaning than that which is expected results. There is also a confusion between the usage of English as an academic language and as a social interaction. English language as a basic interpersonal communication skills, is the language used among friends, and especially in informal settings which can not be used in place of an academic language which requires a certain cognitive level.

An additional example is language understanding. Speech tempo for native-speakers makes its understanding a difficult task for non-native speakers (NNS). The latter sometimes find it hard to distinguish words, not only because of their unfamiliarity, but because they had a wrong idea on their pronounciation.

There is also the impact of the mother tongue. For ESL students, there is always a reference to the mother tongue when it comes to writing or speaking. This automatic process leads to a purely translated speech. Taking the Arabic language, which is described as an ornamented language, there is a use of adjectives and descriptions before stating the matter. On the contrary, English states directly the point without using any curved ways.

Finally, there is the environmental problem. ESL students are generally exposed to non- speaking lecturers. In some cases the teacher can not recognize the unadequacy of words because of an unconscious reffering to the mother tongue. Besides, ESl students use correct English only when being supervised. When outside they rarely use it.

As has been noted, learning English is not an easy task, and being an ESL student harden its acquistion. In spite of all the problems stated previously, ESL students- should not being discouraged.
