Is it American or British style??

Hi,

I am confused about the way my American customer wrote this sentence:

"The internet cost does sound expensive"

I would only say "The internet cost sounds expensive"

Could some A.E speaker explain this? Is it the same in B.E or is just an American way to say ?

Thank you!

Hi Pamela, I think that's not the matter of american or british english whereas "does" is there for more emphasis. Let's see what others say about this. Maybe a native-speaker can clarify the issue better.

it's just a more polite way of saying you think something is too expensive and might like to hear more about why it costs so much.

Hi,
Pamela81...does sound expensive
In that sentence, does functions as an auxiliary verb while the main verb (sound) goes to its basic form.

This structure is commonly used in any variety of English, so it is highly likely that you will hear both American

English speakers and British English speakers use it even in their most cas

Hi,

'It does sound expensive' could be said in a context in which a high price has already been discussed.

eg
Mary: Using the internet in that way will cost a lot of money.
Tom: Yes, it does

Thank you for all the replies. It is very clear.

From my side, since I am not an English native speaker, I find easier to say "It sounds really expensive"....

All is very clear, thanks !!!!
