Is it acceptable to use either commas or parenthesis to set off the underlined phrase which is a non-essential element? Please help me.

1. One must exercise discretion in selling, and even purchasing, foods and drinks.

Years ago, I was taught to avoid the use of brackets in formal essays. I think they interrupt the flow more than commas do, and I even suggest that they can lead to poorly constructed sentences. We say food and drinks.
