Is it a must to use Past tense after or before past perfect continuous?

Can I just say :

I had been swimming for 4 hours already.

instead of saying:

I had been swimming for 4 hours already by the time you arrived.

The story is, I was swimming at the beach for 4 hours till "you" arrives.
