Is it a grammatical mistake to use "in" here?

I'm reading The Curious Case of Benjamin Button when I come across this strange usage of "in" in the sentence. Here goes the quotation:On the September morning consecrated to the enormous event he arose nervously at six o'clock dressed himself, adjusted an impeccable stock, and hurried forth through the streets of Baltimore to the hospital, to determine whether the darkness of the night had borne in new life upon its bosom. I think the "in" after the "borne" is unnecessary so that it can be left out or it should be replaced with "a".Is it a grammatical mistake? Please let me know.Thank you, teachers.
