Is it a English saying ?

"It's as clear as mud-although no more unclear than aspects of the illness itself."

Is "It's as clear as mud" a saying ? And what's the meaning of this sentence?

If something is "clear" you can easily understand it.
Mud is obviously NOT clear, so if something is "as clear as mud" then it's not clear at all.
