I'm afraid that this is such an unnatural English sentence that it is difficult to repair. rebazg My father thought he must be followed He may have thought that his advice or example shoud be followed, but not that he should be followed. rebazg because he created his sons and daughters OK, technically speaking he was involved in the existence of his sons and daughters, but he didn't create them.

Suggestion of phrase: "My father thought he ought to have his advices listened and his example followed, for he had raised his kids and had always brought food to my mother´s table."

Yes. Advice is an uncoutable noun and the preposition 'to' has to be placed after listened.
I've heard some American peolple say: an advice. Is it accepted in informal speaking?
