"is it 4G" "has it got 4G"???

hi everyone,
as someone who is not blessed with a smartphone, and thus hardly ever needs to speak smartphonese, i was wondering if i could get some consensus on how best to phrase a sentence inquiring about a smartphone's broadband capabilities.
Would it be:
"Does it have 4G?"
"Is it 4G?"
"Does it have 4G mobile broadband?"
Does it have a 4G internet connection?" etc.etc.etc.
Similarly, in the declarative:
"it is 4g"
"it has 4g"
"it has 4g mobile broadband" &c&c&c.
Thanks in advance for your help!

When dealing with consumer technology, a lot of slang, shorthand, and nicknames are used. Most of your phrasing can be considered correct. " While this can be heard in speech, it's technically incorrect as 4G is a network technology, and the phone is a device that can use it.

  • I would avoid spelling out 'mobile broadband' or 'internet connection', as the term 4G implies those features.
  • However, if you are speaking with someone who does not understand what 4G is, rephrasing to use those terms may help.

The outlier is "Is it 4G?" or "It is 4G." While this can be heard in speech, it's technically incorrect as 4G is a network technology, and the phone is a device that can use it.

Hi Francis,thanks for your reply.
It would seem, then, that the most consistent (in terms of usability and grammatical accuracy) would be "Does it have 4G/Has it got 4G?" and "It has 4G."
Would you agree?
