Is 'instead' necessary in this sentence?

The man dove out of the way to avoid the car, which instead went on to crash into a tree.

(The person in the car is deliberately trying to hit the man.)

I think not. But it's the kind of English we often say, and we usually understand easily what the speaker means.

Saying he dove . . instead of He dived . . . is mainly a feature of American English, I believe.
