Is ‘in’ necessary?

I don’t want to fall behind (in) class.

I’ve found both patterns, but I would like to make sure whether which expression sounds more common?

Also, is this possible to say, “I don’t want to fall behind other students.”

"I don’t want to fall behind class." is not possible in my US English. "I don’t want to fall behind in class." is unremarkable.
