Is Honesty the best policy?

There are many opinions whether or not it is ever acceptable to lie. Some people argue that telling the truth, without tact, can actually be emotionally hurtful. Others say that eventually, the truth would be revealed and the lies would be more damaging than the truth. Honesty helps build relationships with others. However, some people are not honest, so they can cause problems and hurt others. Because of this, honesty is the best policy because it develops trust and builds relationships.Honesty is important because it develops trust and helps form relationships. Honesty develops trust because it allows the person to have confidence in you. Trust is very crucial in jobs, family, and school. Employers want workers who are reliable and responsible. For an example, my older cousin is very honest with others. She is in college on a full scholarship, and has a well-paying job. She works and studies hard, so the working and studying environment admire her. Being honest and responsible in her job and school, she gets excellent grades. Honesty is important in having a successful life. However, if one is not honest, people lose respect for him. If a person lies to another, he or she may doubt him next time, even if the statement is true. Even if the person succeeds to lie, the truth will eventually be found out. Lying does not give people benefits in life.
I have some experiences of lying myself. Last year, I trusted all of my friends. One of my friends owed me money, because I bought food for him. Constantly, I reminded him that he owed me money, and he would always say that he would bring it next time. However, even after the school year ended, he had not given me my money back. Since then, I did not trust him with my money or with my valuable possessions, because I was afraid he would take them and not give them back. Not surprisingly, he had lied to people many times. Once people found out that he had lied to them, they stopped talking to him and letting him borrow their belongings. Lying damages the relationship and the trust between people.
There are also many children’s stories about lying and being honest. For example, “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” is a great way of informing people of the damaging effects of lying. In the story, there was a boy who looked over a village’s sheep. One day, he got bored and called out wolf, when there wasn’t any. The villagers came out with their plows and shovels, only to find that the boy was lying. This happened two more times, until the villagers ignored the boy. Then, the boy saw the wolf, and cried out that there was a wolf. Because of his previous lies, the villagers ignored him. So the wolf ate the sheep and the boy. This is a very good example of why honesty is important. The boy, how lied many times, had discouraged the villagers, making them lose their trust in him. The boy’s credibility was lowered down. When the boy was not lying, the villagers did not trust him anymore, so they ignored him. Lying destroys the relationship and trust between people. Honesty maintains those relationships, and can help them grow.
Honesty is the best policy because it builds the relationships between people. Many people have experienced lying, and how it has the potential to ruin trust. There are also many other stories and fables about being honest and not lying. There are some occasions where lying is necessary, but on a regular basis, honesty is the best policy.
