is "his name" in this sentence OK?

Question: A child of noble birth, his name was famous among the children in that school.

They say "his name" is wrong and it should be corrected with "he". But why?

Your sentence is OK as written, although it is in a very fancy style. More common would be A child of noble birth, he was famous among the children in that school. Here, the apposition of 'child of noble birith' and 'he' is more explicit.
