Is held or holds

(1) "The competition is held every year."

(2) "The competition holds every year."

Today I was given the test in school which was supposed to be filled with various tenses. Once I had read the sentence above, two probable possibilities struck me. The first possibility which I find the most verified and correct one and which in addition my teacher approves of as well is surely the passive voice.

However, I came up with the second alternative solution that my teacher kept wondering about for a long time and couldn't work out whether or not it is acceptable to use.

Therefore, I'd be like to be enlighted about the grammar construction that has occured in my second made-up sentence.

And finally, I've come across two names I'm not certain of if they concern this topic. The verbs called ergative or unaccusative.

Thank you so much.Emotion: smile
