Is 'he was' optional?

Our son has been at Just Education since (he was) in Primary 2. We are proud to say that he has topped his level all these years in his school.

Is 'he was' optional?

Thanks.

If you omit "he was", you also have to omit "in". I assume that "primary 2" is a grade, class, or level designation.

Yes. Where I live, primary 2 is the second year in a child's education.
