Is he in?

Hi

When we ask, Is he in?, does the "in" refer to anything specific, like his house, for example, or can it also refer to the office or establishment where "he" works?

What about a bar he frequently visits (as a customer) - Would the Is he in question be appropriate (assuming the person we're asking knows whom we are talking about)?

Please help.

Thank you.

Yes - you can ask ‘Is he in?’ to refer to any of those places mentioned, though ‘Is he there?’ might be more suitable.
