Is "GIVE OFF" the right phrase?

Would you say this?

- It's not the image he gave off; that of a generous person, the first time I saw him.

Thank you

Top answer

You might hear "give off an image", but it doesn't seem ideal to me. The expression you might be looking for is "give an/the impression". The rest of the sentence is a bit iffy in terms of its order.

  • In conversation, though, when you're making it up as you go along, you might say: "It's not the impression he gave -- that of a generous person -- the first time I saw him".
