Is 'for' required?

Hello,

Help please. Is there a difference in the following phrase regarding the presence of 'for' (i.e., w/ and w/o 'for')? Thanks.

"meet him for the first time"

Top answer

Meet him the first time - that sounds like there are lots of meetings going on and you are giving instuctions to someone to go to the first meeting. Meet him for the fist time - they wil be meeting him again.

Normally, I would say:
"The first time I met him was in 2006."
-or-
"I met him for the first time in 2006."

Both sentences have the same meaning.

The phrase "for the (first, tenth, millionth) time" is just the way we say it when we're talking about how many times we've done something.
