Is "for" redundant?

Mr Hisyam - who was appointed to replace the legal team that Najib discharged at the end of July - had requested for the case to be deferred for three to four months as the defence needed sufficient time to deal with the case.

Yes. Personally, I would have left out 'for' in that context.

As far as I know, 'requested for' only occurs naturally in the passive:

The total funding which was requested for the U.S. Secret Service was $34 million.

Here 'for' means 'on behalf of', which is different from the usage of 'for' in
