Is " fighting" appropriate here?

Why did everyone say South Korea had done a good job fighting COVID-19

Can eliminate, vanish, kill, avoid and preventing be used here

For 'fighting' you might substitute 'eliminating' and 'preventing' (if that's what South Korea had actually done). No one has yet found an effective way of eliminating or preventing it so far, however. 'killing' and 'avoiding' are not good choices, in my opinion.

  • You can certainly kill a virus in a test tube, but that's not the point, and there are so many cases of COVID-19 throughout the whole world that it's untruthful to say that anyone has avoided it.
