Is “extend” the right word to use here?

”I usually get up at 8. Sometimes it can extend to 9, though.”

The problem is not so much with "extend"as with "it". Spell out single-digit numbers unless there is a good reason not to.

One possibility is ”I usually get up at eight.

Native English speakers would not say that. Here is a natural sentence.

”I usually get up at 8, but sometimes I sleep until 9.”

This is less common:

I usually get 8 hours of sleep each night, but when I am very tired, I extend it to 9.
