Hi. Could anyone please tell me if I can use "dish" here?
They sat at the dinner table passing around the different dishes.
With "dish" I don't mean a whole meal, only a part of a meal, like one dish is eg. potatoes, another is some kind of meat, while yet another could be salad. Is "dish" the best word to use? And is the sentence natural?
Thank you.
They sat at the dinner table passing around the different dishes. There is nothing wrong with "dish" there, the meaning is right, except that in this specific context the reader is tempted to picture the actual platters and bowls that the food is on and in. They are the dishes, too, inconveniently.
