"... is composed of shorter sessions of varying length"

Hi, everybody!

Could anyone help me with this extract from a passage which tests reading comprehension. This passage covers universities in The United States. I have problem with understanding the meaning of it.

"...Some schools observe a quarter system comprised of fall, winter, spring and summer quarter. The academic year, September to June, is divided into three quarters of eleven weeks each begining in September, January and March: the summer quarter, June to August, is composed of shorter sessions of varying length..."

The phrase "...is composed of shorter sessions of varying length" has confused me a lot. My question is:

What do "session & varying length" here mean?. What I understand is that schools of this kind offer a variety of choices for student to choose with flexible time...? and why not say "... of varied length" & does it the same meaning with "varying length"

Many thanks for helping me out.

Yes, that is essentially right: all the schools using the quarter system have three 11-week quarters plus a summer quarter which each school may subdivide differently.
