Is "compared" a verb in this case?

Can I please ask for some help? Im confused about the meaning fo the word "compared" in this sentence: "Stegosaurus and Troodon were both big, compared to most reptiles and birds today."

Is it a conjunction or a verb or something else?

Thank you xx

Hello, Anonymous:

I thought that you would like this from L.G. Alexander's 1998 Longman English Grammar:

The past participle [such as "compared"] can be used without any conjunction in front of it, in place of the passive.

When it was viewed from a distance, the island of Nepenthe looked like a cloud.
Viewed from a distance, the island of Nepenthe looke
