Is company name, fruit a third person?

Hi,

I know that -s is used at the end of a verb to indicate present and third person view, eg. she understands the material, she takes my pencil.

My question (1) dog, company name etc a third person in grammar? if not, why is -s still used. eg. the dog plays with the ball, the job offers him security, the company serves termination letter to the employee. (2) And what are they if not a third person?

Note that there is a difference between British and American English in named groups of people such as teams, musical bands and sports teams. Sometimes these are used as third person singular, and sometimes third person plural.
