Is "close" here an adjective or an adverb?

Hello.
I would like to know whether "close" that comes after "We came" in the following sentence is an adjective or an adverb.

"We came close to landing the deal, but the contractor turned us down at the last minute."

Personally, in my opinion, "close" looks like an adjective to me.

Thank you for your replies.
If you answer along with a bit of explanation of it, that would be so much helpful and appreciated.

Have a nice day. Emotion: embarrassed

I think you're right, in which case "close to ..." is being used predicatively, cf. "We were close to ..".
