Is assume a proper verb in this context?

Hi

Is assume a proper verb in the below context?

".... The longer reaction time [of elderly drivers compared to that of young and middle-aged ones] can be seen from different points of view. For example, it can be assumed that old drivers notice the pedestrians later than young and middle-aged drivers, their brains take longer to process the issue, and the motor command is issued later."

Thanks!
