Is/ are

The next five years is/ are going to be the worst time of my life.

Which should be correct?

I think it denotes a period of time & therefore should be followed by 'is'.

I would say, "The next five years will be the worst time of my life," as the next five years haven't/hasn't happened yet. If I had to decide between treating "the next five years" as either a single unit/period of time or as separate things, well, I would probably opt for the latter.

I would accept both "is" and "are".
