Is and Adverb Order

Does the order in which the words "is" and an adverb occur in a sentence make a difference grammatically speaking? For example, are both the following sentences correct, or is only one?

"This is simply the best"

"This simply is the best"

?

Thanks in advance.

Both are correct - the position of an adverb can change the meaning, sometimes subtly, sometimes a lot. I would say the difference is quite subtle here. The emphasis in 1 is on the best (how it is the best), in 2 on is (in other words how it is).

  • Adverbs modify not only verbs but also other adjectives, regardless of the verb used.
