Is an example or are examples

"Keeping object recognition from unwanted “rumination” about an isolated discrepant detail like a failure or reducing the production of cortisol is an example of efficient top down regulation emanating from the implicit self (which does not "want" the rumination) and keeping object recognition from ruminating about task-irrelevant objects."

This is another of very complicated sentences that I found in the article I'm reading and I can't understand why people make things so complicated. I'm not sure if I understand this sentence properly but in my opinion it should be 'examples of' rather than its singular form.

Hi, Yes, I'd say 'examples of'. And I agree with you that it is a terrible sentence,. I find it incomprehensible.
