Is Aluminium ever plural..

I would think the following is correct:

2 million tons of Aluminium is produced in this plant.

and the following is wrong:

2 million tons of Aluminium are produced in this plant.

Is it because Aluminium is an uncountable noun and uncountable nouns are always singular. Thanks for your reply.

Both are correct. It is a matter of what the writer is thinking: of the single quantity of metal, or of the countable units of the metal.

Thanks.
