Is 'a' needed or not?

Can someone please point out whether 'a' is needed or not before the word 'family'.

Is it:
If you are successful in earning someone's trust, you will be treated like family

Or:
If you are successful in earning someone's trust, you will be treated like a family.

Thanks in advance.

Does that make sense?
