Is “a” necessary?

Could you check whether this sentence is free from mistakes? I also would like to know whether I should use ‘a lack of’ or ‘lack of’ because I’ve seen them both before.

Regrettably, many wars and conflicts around the world are caused by a lack of mutual understanding between nations.

I think it is more correct to use "because of" instead of "by". And, I think "a lack" is OK here. kazupocketmonster Regrettably, many wars and conflicts around the world are caused because of a lack of mutual understanding between nations.

'lack of' used to be the norm, but nowadays both are used equally. It's your choice.
