There are a lot of snails. There is a lot of snails.
Or are both correct?
Sometimes I consider a lot to be synonymous with abundant, which is singular; whereas other times I consider a lot to be synonymous with a number of, which is plural. Google searches have led me to nothing but confusion, as usual.
If anyone has the answer to this enigma, please share!
