Is a definite article needed?

Please advise if a definite article is needed for street names such as:

Fifth Avenue, Main Street, 23rd Street

Hi,

If you want to give more preference to what you say you should add 'the'.

1.We shall meet in the Fifth Avenue.

2.They go to the main street for shopping....etc.....

Under the same circumstance, shall we say as following with a the preceeding the street names?

1.We shall meet in the Oxford Street.

2.They go to the the Regent Street for shopping.

Toms, I am afraid that you are giving our students very bad advice. Please do not try to answer questions when you should really be asking them.

You do NOT add 'the' for 'more preference' with proper nouns at all. I cannot imagine where you even got such an idea. Cool Breeze has already answered this question quite satisfactorily, including examples of the few exceptions when '
