Is a comma required in this sentence?

Hi there!

Which sentence would be accurate?

Fiber is important because it helps lower your cholesterol and keeps your heart healthy.

Fiber is imporant because it helps lower your cholesterol, and keeps your heart healthy.

I realize that there are better ways to word this sentence, but this is a question from my daughter's textbook and we're not sure about the comma placement!

Thanks!

Julie
