Is a comma needed here?

I would like to know if a comma is needed here before 'such as'. I have read about commas before 'such as' but am still not quite clear when to use them and when not.

It is important to spend time alone without any distractions such as people and gadgets.

Manish Jaitly I would like to know if a comma is needed here before 'such as'. That ordinarily takes a housekeeping comma. You see, without the comma, the reader is tempted to interpret it to mean that only distractions that are similar to people and to gadgets are important, and distractions similar to flea bites and warfare, for example, are OK.

  • You obviously don't mean that, but the comma is a nice little signpost for the reader, and he doesn't even see it at all if he is any good.
