Is a comma needed after "is"?

The word is, "clever".
The sentence is, "He is clever".

Is a comma needed after "is" in each sentence?

I see no need for it in the first sentence and I would probably omit it in the second as well. However, especially in American English more commas and full stops / periods are used than in British English, and this may be one of those cases. There seems to be a growing tendency to omit commas where they have been used for ages.
