Is a comma needed?

"When the bogeyman goes to sleep at night he checks his closet for Chuck Norris."

Does this sentence need a comma? This was on a chalkboard at a bar last night. A friend of mine and I had a bet about whether or not it needed a comma. Please let me know your thoughts.

Not strictly necessary, no confusions without it.

But I would use it.

Try a search at Google with:

"when he goes" "he checks"
(both, as in the above)

and you're going to see that most full sentences using both have the comma.

"When the bogeyman goes to sleep at night" is an adverbial subordinate clause. A comma should be placed in between "night" and "he".
