Irrelevant Sentence

Hi, I'm trying the omit the sentence which does not belong to the passage. So here is the passage

(A) After Vladimir Lenin died, Joseph Stalin took over the Russian government, becoming one of the world's most brutal dictators. (B) With the help of his secret police, thousands of those who opposed to Stalin's policies wer either sent to prison or executed. (C) During World War II, Stalin concentrated on foreign enemies. (D) Farmers had to give up their land and factories were put under government control. (E) However, after the war, he ruled his people with an iron fist.

Is D irrelevant?

Is D irrelevant?

I wouldn't say that D is irrelevant, because it is another example of Stalin's brutality, though not as extreme as that mentioned in B. It seems instead simply to be in the wrong position. I would put D before C. C should be followed directly by E.

But if you really had to omit one of those sentences, it would be D.

That's difficult. I don't think that any of the information is irrelevant. I might order the ideas slightly differently, but I wouldn't leave anything out as irrelevant ...

(A) After Vladimir Lenin died, Joseph Stalin took over the Russian government, becoming one of the world's most brutal dictators. (B) For example, he created a secret police force that imprisoned and executed those who oppose his policies. (D) He also denied individuals' rights to private property by placing farms and factories under government control. (C) During World War II, Stalin had little choice but to concentrate on foreign enemies, rather than those he perceived as enemies within his own country. (E) However, after the war, he resumed ruling his people with an iron fist.

In the present day, the next British Government may take back control of such things as water, electricity, gas and transport. Hopefully, that will not need to be done in a brutally dictatorial way. So you could argue that (D) comes closest to being irrelevant. However, Stalin did actually do it in a brutal and dictatorial way (especially in the Ukraine), so I think the sentence is relevant to the theme of the paragraph
