Irregardless

I had a lengthy argument with a fellow last night about "irregardless". Later we moved on to the non-existence, as I see it, of synonyms. I think I finally convinced him it is a word, perhaps because he admitted after a few minutes that "ain't" is definitely a word. I couldn't convince him though that "irregardless" was the best choice of words in my sentence that caused him to react with a superior guffaw. He wasn't the worst though, as they say in Ireland.
